PÚBLICO na Escola is a media literacy project in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Fundação Belmiro de Azevedo. It provides a platform (called TRUE) to which schools can reach out if they want to start a newspaper. The organisation values journalism in school newspapers in pursuit of teaching students aged 6 to 18 about journalism and media literacy. Their other mission is to incorporate journalism in classrooms while fostering an understanding of the news and media in an increasingly complex media landscape. As such, Público is the main organisation in Portugal that focuses on school journalism using their own newspaper as a pedagogical tool.
Público na Escola runs several programmes and activities including the National School Newspaper Contest. Each year, more than 100 newspapers compete to win one of several prizes such as the Incentive Award. Besides prize money, its winners also get to participate in a workshop on how to create a newspaper run by Público. The most recent contest instructed students to create a journalistic work on topics that are relevant to their culture. The students were from different areas and told stories of places and traditions important to their cultures. https://www.publico.pt/publico-na-escola/artigo/regulamento-concurso-nacional-jornais-escolares-202223-2036890
Other projects include teacher trainings as well as teaching and learning materials that are available on the Público na Escola website.
Currently the only project in Portugal that puts emphasis on school journalism.
In 2022, 129 entries entered the National Newspaper Contest.
