STILL ACTIVE
News Decoder is a global educational news service founded in 2015 by Nelson Graves, with a mission to cultivate internationally recognized global citizenship competencies in young people. They achieve this by teaching journalism, media literacy, and global citizenship skills to students in 22 schools across 18 countries on five continents. Their educational services include mentoring by professional journalists, training workshops, webinars on global issues, e-learning courses, and handbooks on reporting and writing.
News Decoder believes that addressing the complex challenges of the 21st century requires informed and responsible global citizens. Their unique approach uses journalism training and news literacy to nurture critical thinking, responsible media consumption, and the ability to cooperate in solving global problems such as conflict, poverty, sustainability, and climate change. They encourage students to think like journalists by analysing information sources, considering diverse perspectives, and understanding context and precedent. Additionally, they facilitate interactions with experts and promote international, cross-cultural collaborations to instil universal values, intercultural awareness, and respect for diversity and common humanity. These skills are not only fundamental to global citizenship but also transferable to various career paths, equipping students for success in any field they choose.
