Games in Schools began as a research project that explored how commercial video games are and can be used in schools. The initial research project comprises a literature review, interviews with decision makers and stakeholders, case studies and a survey of 600 teachers. After its publication in 2009, a dedicated Handbook for Teachers was developed along with an online course. The project has since developed into an annual training programme in the form of 6-week long Massive Online Open Courses (MOOCs). These MOOCs aim to empower and train teachers across Europe and beyond to utilise video games in the classroom. Games in Schools showcases how video games can help acquire essential competences and digital skills, enhance the learning and teaching process, foster social inclusion and help close the gender gap in ICT and STEM careers. After successful completion of the course, teachers receive a certificate.
The Handbook has recently been updated and re-launched. A revised research report will be launched in 2024.
In 2019, 4282 prom 73 countries registered to take part in the MOOC with 1581 participants following at least one course module and 645 participants passing the MOOC and receiving the course certification.
In the 2023 iteration, 1911 people from 77 countries registered to take part in the MOOC. Of those, 1273 participated and 402 completed the MOOC.
